To become a licensed pilot, a person must:

• be at least 17 years old;
• be able to read, write, speak, and understand English;
• pass an appropriate medical exam;
• meet certain aeronautical experience requirements, including obtaining at least 40 hours of flight time;
• pass a written knowledge test; and 
• pass a practical test (checkride) that involves an oral exam and a skills-based flight test.

Yes! You have to be at least 17 years old to get your pilot's certificate, but you can begin flying much earlier. You can also solo, or fly the plane by yourself, at only 16 years old.

Simply schedule a first flight lesson! From there, your instructor will guide you through the entire process, from getting your first flight hour to preparing for your checkride.

The first flight lesson begins with time spent on the ground learning the basics of how the plane works, how to control it, and how to make sure it's ready to fly. After that, you'll be able to taxi the plane ("drive" it on the ground), take off, maneuver the plane in the air, and participate in the landing. Your instructor will always be there to help when you need it, but you'll be in control of the plane.

With regular lessons, the average student can get his pilot's license in 3-6 months. Dedicated students looking to finish faster can get their pilot's certificates in as soon as a month with more frequent lessons and diligent study.
